Biden administration names former Obama aide Malley as Iran envoy: official

Image
WASHINGTON: The Biden administration on Thursday named Robert Malley, a former top adviser in the Obama administration, as special envoy for Iran, a senior State Department official said, confirming an earlier Reuters report. Malley was a key member of former President Barack Obama’s team that negotiated the nuclear accord with Iran and world powers, an agreement that Donald Trump abandoned in 2018 despite strong opposition from Washington’s European allies. The post would make Malley the point person in Biden’s efforts to deal with Iran after years of worsening relations under former President Donald Trump, who pulled out of a 2015 international nuclear deal with Tehran and reimposed crippling economic sanctions. When Malley’s name first surfaced in news reports as a leading candidate for the post, he drew criticism from some Republican lawmakers and pro-Israel groups that expressed concern that he would be soft on Iran and tough on Israel. But a number of foreign policy veterans ...

All the bodies had been removed from the plant and authorities were working on identifying them and notifying the families, Couch said. Of the 12 people injured, three were in critical condition, five were listed in fair condition and the remaining three had been released from hospital, officials said. Nitrogen, typicall...

Pfizer vaccine only slightly less effective against key South African mutations – study

Image
NEW YORK: Pfizer Inc and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine appeared to lose only a small bit of effectiveness against an engineered virus with three key mutations from the new coronavirus variant found in South Africa, according to a laboratory study conducted by the U.S. drugmaker. The study by Pfizer and scientists from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), which has not yet been peer-reviewed, showed a less than two-fold reduction in antibody titer levels, indicating the vaccine would likely be effective in neutralizing a virus with the so-called E484K and N501Y mutations found in the South African variant. The study here was conducted on blood taken from people who had received the vaccine. Its findings are limited because it does not look at the full set of mutations found in the new South African variant. While these findings don’t indicate the need for a new vaccine to address the emerging variants, Pfizer and BioNTech are prepared to respond if a variant of SARS...

Not willing to pay the extra money, they ended up eating all the fruits! “We just stood there and ate the whole thing up. It took about 20-30 minutes,” Wang said. After finishing the whole box of oranges, they started to suffer from ulcers in their mouths. “We never want to have oranges again,” Wang said. A photo of one of the travellers peeling an orange has gone viral on Chinese social media platform Weibo. One us...
