Chile approves Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for teenagers

Image
Chile’s public health regulator on Monday approved the use of Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for teenagers, it said in a statement, as the country races to hit a target of herd immunity by July. The Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has already been rolled out in Chile for those 17 and older since emergency approval was granted in December and will now be offered for children aged 12 to 16, the ISP regulator said. The ISP said its decision followed similar authorization granted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency. The ISP’s director, Heriberto Garcia, said the decision would help Chile hit its goal of herd immunity with 80% of the target population vaccinated by July. “This is very good news for protecting our adolescents, who 14 days after two doses will have a very good immunity to go resume normal life,” he said. So far, 10.5 million people – 69% of the target population – have received one dose of COVID-19 vaccine in Chile, and 7.

VIDEO: Teenager spends six years digging underground house after fight with parents

Image
After fighting with his parents, a teenager in Spain ended up digging a hole to channelise his anger. In 2015, Andres Canto was just 14 when he fell out with his parents when they told him he couldn’t go out of the house wearing a tracksuit. Annoyed and dejected, he grabbed a pickaxe and started digging up his garden to let off some steam. He didn’t end after a few hours. Canto spent six years digging an underground cave beneath the garden. The teenager created his own oasis in La Romana, Alicante. The underground cave is now complete with a sitting room and a bathroom. Canto, now 20, is happy with what he achieved. However, he can’t really understand what made him dig up his garden for six years. “My parents wanted me to change clothes to go to the village, but I wanted to wear the tracksuit that I liked to wear at home so I could mess around in the village,” said Canto. “They told me I could not go out dressed like this and I said: ‘No worries, I can entertain myself, and I

Is it all Greek to you? Coronavirus variants get new names

Image
Coronavirus variants with clunky, alphanumeric names have now been assigned the letters of the Greek Alphabet in a bid to simplify discussion and pronunciation while avoiding stigma. The World Health Organization revealed the new names on Monday amid criticism that those given by scientists such as the so-called South African variant which goes by multiple names including B.1.351, 501Y.V2 and 20H/501Y.V2 were too complicated. As such, the four coronavirus variants considered of concern by the U.N. agency and known generally by the public as the UK, South Africa, Brazil and India variants have now been given the letters Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta according to the order of their detection. Other variants of interest continue down the alphabet. “While they have their advantages, these scientific names can be difficult to say and recall, and are prone to misreporting,” said the WHO, explaining the decision. The choice of the Greek Alphabet came after months of deliberations in which o

Man eats snake to ‘keep Covid-19 at bay’

Image
A man ate a dead snake to “protect” himself from the coronavirus (Covid-19). The incident occurred in India’s Tamil Nadu. 50-year-old Vadivel was arrested and slapped a fine of Rs7,000 after a video of him eating a venomous snake surfaced on social media. He claimed that snakes are good antidotes to Covid-19 and keep the deadly virus at bay. According to reports, the man caught the reptile in a field and killed it before eating it. A forest officer in Madurai district said the agriculture worker had been instigated to eat the snake by other people. He had been inebriated at the time of the incident. Luckily, the man didn’t bite into the venom glands of the snake, identified as a common krait, a species of highly venomous reptiles native to the Indian subcontinent. Its venom consists of powerful neurotoxins that can even be fatal for humans if not treated. The reptile had been found dead in a drain, the forest officer said. Man finds out woman living in his cupboard for days

Image
One of the most disturbing things in life would be to find out that a stranger has been living in your house for days. Joe Cummings of New York had such an experience back in 2009. He had even shared a video, taken with his home security camera, to prove his claims. Cummings had set up a home camera system after noticing that some items had gone missing from his house. When he checked the footage after a few days, he was taken aback. Cummings found a woman had been secretly living in his cupboard, stealing his food and urinating in the kitchen sink. The shocking video shows the woman getting atop a high table and removing a stool from under it. She then carefully steps onto the stool before stepping onto the floor. A few seconds later, the video shows the woman grabbing some drinks and snacks from the fridge. Later, she opens the cupboard and then goes on to watch the television for a while. She then opens the fridge again for some more food. But this time, she hides fearing

World’s cheapest and expensive passports

Image
Passports come in all colours and sizes, rankings and designs; but it is also important to note that the cost of obtaining a passport also defers one from the next. SavingSpot  has gone through the number crunching and produced some interesting headline results. At $74USD, the mean price of the passport does not actually fluctuate that significantly around the world and across the developed countries. Using the January 2021 US dollar exchange rates, SavingSpot pored through the available data for each country to find the prices for each country. Where passports were offered in different sizes (number of pages) and expiration dates, the option of the fewest pages and longest validity was chosen. At a whopping $800, Syria has by far most expensive passports. Affordability of the passport Key to the study is also the affordability factor for each country. Of course, a dollar in North America is not the same as a dollar in central Africa. So to compile the affordability the average

Sri Lanka facing marine disaster from burning ship: official

NEGOMBO: Sri Lanka is facing its worst beach pollution crisis as tonnes of plastic waste from a burning container ship wash ashore, a senior environment official said Saturday. Fishermen have been banned from an 80-kilometre (50-mile) stretch of coast near the Singapore-registered MV X-Press Pearl as an international firefighting operation went into a 10th day. “There is smoke and intermittent flames seen from the ship,” navy spokesman Captain Indika de Silva told AFP. “However, the vessel is stable and it is still in anchorage.” Authorities are more worried about millions of polyethylene pellets washing up on beaches and threatening fish-breeding shallow waters. The affected seafront is known for its crabs and jumbo prawns as well as its tourist beaches. “This is probably the worst beach pollution in our history,” said Dharshani Lahandapura, head of Sri Lanka’s Marine Environment and Protection Authority (MEPA). Video of 7-year-old ‘Spiderman’ takes the internet by storm

The Internet is not lacking in inspirational videos, as one of the videos showing a seven-year-old boy in India climbing walls like the Marvel superhero character Spider-Man is making rounds on the various platforms of social media. A clip shared on Twitter by IAS officer MV Rao features a child attempting to climb a pillar. Though he slips several times, the little one makes it to the top and remembers to celebrate the achievement as soon as he hits the ground. The caption to the video reads, “This kid is my guru.” Within 24 hours of being uploaded, the clip has garnered over 117k views. While several users mistook the child in the clip to be a girl, some in the comment section soon identified the kid as Arat Hosseini, a Liverpool Academy footballer. Arat is no stranger to social media and videos of his exercises and stunts performed under the supervision of his father have made a mark with Internet users.
